US Mission Commends Edo For Peaceful Elections

The United States Mission in Nigeria has showered praise on the people of Edo State for their exemplary conduct during the gubernatorial elections held on September 21. US Ambassador Richard Mills Jr. commended the residents for their peaceful and calm participation, setting a shining example for democratic processes.

In a statement, Ambassador Mills emphasized the vital role of transparency in maintaining public trust, stressing that adherence to established electoral procedures is paramount. He applauded Governor Godwin Obaseki’s passionate appeal for peace, encouraging all stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to respect legal channels for contesting results.

“As the people of Edo State await the announcement of election results, we urge all parties to uphold the integrity of the electoral process,” Ambassador Mills stated.

“Transparency, fairness, and due process are essential in fostering public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.”

The election saw Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress emerge victorious, securing an impressive 291,667 votes and winning 11 out of 18 Local Government Areas. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party garnered 247,274 votes, claiming seven LGAs, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party trailed behind with 22,761 votes.

The US government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria.

Ambassador Mills pledged to closely monitor the situation, ensuring that democratic principles remain sacrosanct.

This endorsement from the US Mission underscores the significance of peaceful elections in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
