Experts Call For Teacher-Friendly Housing Policies

The federal government is facing renewed calls to prioritize teachers’ welfare by implementing policies that foster homeownership and provide necessary amenities.

At the 2024 “Teachers Must Become Landlords Summit” in Lagos, Festus Uko, CEO of Real Estate Synergy Support Associate (RESSA), emphasized the urgent need to support teachers, who shape the nation’s future.
“Teachers are the backbone of our society, and it’s crucial we empower them to secure their own futures,” Uko stressed. “By providing affordable housing options, we can boost their morale, commitment, and overall impact on students.”

RESSA’s innovative project tackles the housing deficit among low-income teachers in Lagos State. By pooling resources and investing in properties, teachers can become landowners within 18 months, enjoying flexible payment plans and waived fees.

“This initiative not only provides a safety net but also encourages teachers to invest in their communities,” Uko explained. “When educators are financially stable, they become more creative, productive, and effective in shaping young minds.”
Uko also underscored the importance of integrity and transparency in teachers’ personal and professional lives. ” Upholding strong values is essential for building trust and inspiring future generations.”

Participants praised the initiative, acknowledging its potential to transform the lives of educators and, by extension, their students.

To address Nigeria’s staggering 28 million housing unit deficit, experts advocate for a collaborative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) approach. This model combines government-provided land, infrastructure, and tax incentives with private sector funding, including foreign investments.

“By joining forces, we can create affordable housing solutions that benefit teachers, low-income families, and the nation as a whole,” Uko concluded.

As Nigeria strives to build a stronger, more equitable society, prioritizing teachers’ welfare and homeownership is critical. By empowering educators, the country can cultivate a brighter future for generations to come.
