Nigerians Demand Change As #FearlessOct.1 Protest Rocks Lagos

Today, October 1, 2024, Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, was marked by a powerful display of citizen activism as protesters converged at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos. The #FearlessOctober1 protest, spearheaded by civil society groups, voiced the growing discontent with the country’s economic woes.

Chanting solidarity songs and brandishing placards, demonstrators called for urgent government action. “Enough is enough! Reverse the crippling electricity tariff!” and “Protect democratic rights, end attacks now!” were among the passionate pleas.

Omoyele Sowore, a prominent advocate for change, joined the rally, emphasizing the need for collective action. “We will no longer tolerate ineffective governance; it’s time for transformative leadership.”
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, led the security contingent monitoring the protest, ensuring a peaceful expression of dissent.

This demonstration follows the #EndBadGovernance protests in August, driven by the same demands: addressing hunger, inflation, insecurity, government wastefulness, electoral reforms, and human capital development.

Education Rights Campaign spokesperson, Hassan Taiwo Soweto, stressed, “We’re not just protesting; we’re demanding tangible solutions to Nigeria’s entrenched problems.”
The protest’s organizers vow to persist until their voices are heard and meaningful change is achieved.
