In a significant boost to Nigeria’s aviation sector, Emirates Airlines has resumed operations in the country, two years after suspending flights due to revenue repatriation challenges.
The airline’s aircraft touched down at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in Nigeria-UAE aviation relations.
In 2022, Emirates halted Nigerian operations when $85 million in revenues was blocked by the Nigerian government due to forex shortages. However, following successful diplomatic negotiations and repatriation of funds, the airline has reinstated its services.

Nigeria’s Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister, Festus Keyamo, led a delegation to the UAE to finalize negotiations and secure a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement, strengthening aviation ties between both nations.
“We are thrilled with Emirates’ return, a win-win for Nigeria and the UAE,” said Kingsley Nwokoma, President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria. “This development will provide more options for passengers and potentially pave the way for Air Peace to resume UAE flights.”
The relaunch flight, EK 783, received a warm welcome with a water cannon salute. Passengers praised Emirates’ services, despite initial low passenger numbers.
Emirates’ return is expected to enhance connectivity, boost trade, and increase travel opportunities between Nigeria and the UAE.
