Abdi’s Resilience In Turbulent Times

By African Future Leadership Magazine.

Abdi Hassan, a 46-year-old man, wakes before dawn for his morning prayers and his thoughts on the day ahead. Running his store, Hassan’s Provisions, a small shop with his wife, Nimo, keeps him busy. Their kids, Jamila and Ahmed, rely on them for almost everything.

As Abdi opens his shop, multiple gunfire echoes through his street. All the customers fear venturing out and worrying about the safety of those outside on the street. Abdi, on the other hand, was worried about feeding his family.

Abdi’s Neighbor, Ali, who is a former soldier now disabled, daily begs Abdi for any assistance he can render. Abdi provides food encouragement and, sometimes, understanding of hardship.

The worst is that the Sales are poor due to the recent unrest. The Neighborhood, including Abdi, struggles to make ends meet. Jamila excels in school, but her future is very uncertain. Even though she has dreams of becoming a doctor.

Abdi reflects on his country’s turmoil, war, extremism, and corruption. Basic needs like electricity and water are even very scarce. Yet, the resilience defines the Neighborhood’s residents.

At dusk, Abdi’s family struggled to share dinner. Jamila’s aspirations inspire him because, despite the hardships, Abdi has vowed and promised to keep striving hard for his family, no matter what.

This story mirrors the struggles and hardships faced by Africans, the insecurity, the economic hardship, and the community’s importance.

Abdi’s resilience and strong heart echo the determination of many Africans who are currently facing similar challenges.
