Trump triumphs, emerges America’s 47th president in unprecedented return to power

Donald Trump has won the U.S. presidential election, clinching a dramatic comeback that shocked both supporters and critics.

He won the election securing 277 Election College votes or 51.06 per cent while Kamala Harris got 224 votes or 47.45 per cent.

His victory over Vice President Kamala Harris underscores a divided America, as many voters voiced concerns about the economy and immigration, key themes Trump championed throughout his campaign.

“America is ready to be strong and prosperous again,” Trump declared in his victory speech in Palm Beach, Florida.

The election results hinged on battleground states, with Wisconsin tipping Trump over the 270 electoral votes needed. This victory follows a tumultuous period for Trump, who faced a series of legal and political battles after refusing to accept his 2020 defeat, which led to the Capitol insurrection and a historic conviction for falsifying business records. Despite these controversies, millions of Americans rallied behind him, driven by frustrations over inflation and record-high immigration levels.

Also, global markets reacted swiftly to Trump’s victory. The Dow surged by 2.85% in early trading, and Bitcoin, often favoured by Trump’s base, reached an unprecedented high of $75,000. Major companies aligned with Trump’s policies, like Tesla under Elon Musk, saw stocks jump by 12%.

While his victory brings hopes for economic reform, others remain wary. Throughout his campaign, Trump criticised foreign aid spending, particularly U.S. support for Ukraine. “America first,” he declared, striking a chord with voters frustrated by international priorities. However, many warn of rising global tensions, with analysts speculating that his stance could strain relations with allies and increase trade tariffs.

Trump’s return to the White House raises questions about American democracy’s future. His rhetoric remains polarizing, and he continues to praise autocratic leaders like Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Civil rights groups express concerns over his commitment to democratic norms. “This is a defining moment for America,” said political analyst John Simmons in an interview. The world now watches as Trump, unrestrained by a first-term learning curve, leads the U.S. into an uncertain chapter.
