Rwanda is gearing up to bring Formula 1 back to Africa for the first time in over three decades.
President Paul Kagame officially announced the country’s bid, stating that discussions with F1 are making “good progress.” The move could position Rwanda as Africa’s motorsport hub and bring significant economic and tourism benefits.
Speaking in Kigali ahead of the FIA prize-giving ceremony, Kagame emphasized Rwanda’s commitment to hosting a world-class event. “We approach this opportunity with the seriousness and dedication it deserves,” he said, thanking F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali for supporting the initiative.
Rwanda’s ambitious plans include building a permanent circuit near Bugesera International Airport, 40 kilometers south of Kigali.
The project aligns with the country’s vision for innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem lauded Rwanda’s growing influence in motorsport, citing its shared values with the FIA in road safety and sustainability.
Reviving Africa’s F1 Legacy
The African continent has not hosted a Formula 1 race since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has been vocal about bringing the sport back to Africa, calling Rwanda’s proposal “serious” during an interview earlier this year.

For Rwanda, the bid is about more than motorsport. “It is crucial that countries from all regions and income levels have a fair shot at hosting global sporting events,” Kagame said. He criticized outdated attitudes toward nontraditional host nations and stressed the importance of inclusivity in sports.
Economic and Social Impact
Experts estimate that hosting an F1 race could inject millions of dollars into Rwanda’s economy, boosting tourism and creating jobs. Rwanda has already established itself as a global conference destination, and securing a Formula 1 race would cement its reputation as a leader in hosting large-scale international events.
The project also underscores Rwanda’s focus on sustainability and innovation, with the proposed circuit likely to incorporate eco-friendly technology.
Motorsport in Rwanda’s Future
Kagame’s announcement came as Rwanda hosted the FIA’s general assembly, further solidifying its growing role in the motorsport world. As part of the event, Max Verstappen, 2024’s F1 champion, will receive his trophy in Kigali. He is also expected to participate in a grassroots development program organized by the Rwanda Automobile Club as part of a penalty agreement.
While the F1 calendar has not yet confirmed Rwanda’s inclusion, the country’s efforts have drawn global attention. Kagame’s vision and Rwanda’s determination could redefine Africa’s place in motorsport, opening doors for more nations on the continent to follow suit.
