Ademola Lookman has been crowned Africa’s best footballer, winning the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award on Monday in Marrakech, Morocco. Lookman’s victory continued Nigeria’s dominance, marking the country’s second consecutive win after Victor Osimhen’s triumph last year.
The Atalanta striker’s remarkable year included a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen and a key role in Nigeria’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final. “It’s a dream come true. I’m proud to win this for Nigeria,” Lookman said after receiving the award.
Lookman becomes the seventh Nigerian to claim the prestigious title. Previous winners include legends like Nwankwo Kanu, Emmanuel Amuneke, and Rashidi Yekini. Nigeria now holds seven Player of the Year awards, trailing only Cameroon’s record of 11.

In other triumphs, Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie retained her Goalkeeper of the Year title, solidifying her status as Africa’s best shot-stopper. Nnadozie played a pivotal role in securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2024 Olympics after a 16-year absence. “This award is for my team, my coaches, and all the fans who believe in me,” Nnadozie said.
The Super Falcons were also crowned Women’s National Team of the Year, maintaining their dominance as Africa’s top-ranked team. Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau accepted the award, dedicating it to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
Despite Nigeria’s successes, the Super Eagles fell short in the Men’s National Team of the Year category, losing to AFCON champions Ivory Coast. South Africa’s Bafana Bafana were also nominated.
Zambia’s Barbara Banda edged out Nnadozie to win the Women’s Player of the Year award, ending Asisat Oshoala’s reign after the Nigerian forward won her record sixth title in 2023.
In other categories, Egypt’s Al Ahly secured Men’s Club of the Year, while TP Mazembe of DR Congo won the women’s club title. South Africa’s Ronwen Williams was named Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year, and Morocco’s Emerse Fae claimed Men’s Coach of the Year after leading Ivory Coast to AFCON glory.
Lookman’s triumph, alongside Nnadozie’s back-to-back wins, marks a stellar year for Nigerian football.
