Hackers Breach Nigeria’s Statistics Website, Disrupt Access to Vital Data

Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is scrambling to regain control of its official website after a cyberattack left the platform inaccessible. The bureau announced the breach late Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter), urging the public to disregard any information from the compromised site.

The NBS website, a resource for economic and sectoral data, remains offline as of Thursday morning. Visitors to the platform are met with the message, “The site can’t be reached.”

In its statement, the bureau said, “This is to inform the public that the NBS website has been hacked. We are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you.”

The website hosts key data, including GDP reports, inflation trends, and trade statistics, relied upon by policymakers, researchers, and businesses. The timing of the breach has sparked concern, with analysts noting its potential impact on data transparency.

The agency has yet to announce a timeline for restoration but assured stakeholders that recovery efforts are ongoing.
