Tinubu to Attend Mahama’s Inauguration in Ghana: What It Means for Nigeria-Ghana Relations

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will travel to Accra, Ghana, on Monday, January 6, to witness the inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.

The event, scheduled for January 7, marks a significant moment for Ghana, as Mahama returns to lead the nation after previously serving as its 12th president from 2011 to 2017.

Mahama, re-elected in December 2024, will succeed outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has served since 2017. Tinubu’s participation reflects Nigeria’s commitment to fostering strong ties with Ghana, a nation with which it shares a rich history of collaboration.

Speaking on the visit, Presidential Spokesperson Deji Elumoye emphasized the personal and diplomatic bonds between Tinubu and Mahama, as well as the broader relationship between the two West African nations. “This visit highlights the enduring friendship between Nigeria and Ghana and President Tinubu’s dedication to African unity,” he said.

As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu will join several African leaders at the swearing-in ceremony. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior officials will accompany him on this significant trip.

This inauguration comes amid growing calls for stronger regional collaboration. According to recent ECOWAS data, intra-African trade between Nigeria and Ghana surpassed $3.5 billion in 2023, underscoring the economic importance of their partnership.

With Tinubu’s attendance, experts expect renewed discussions on joint efforts to tackle pressing issues, including regional security and economic integration.
