Nigeria’s military has escalated operations against notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, delivering significant blows to his network. Over 24 militants, including key commanders, have been neutralized in recent days, Defense Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed.
“These operations are aimed at dismantling Turji’s network and ensuring the safety of citizens in the North-West,” said Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, outgoing Director of Defense Media Operations.
The offensive, part of Operation Fansan Yamma, targeted Turji’s hideouts across Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger states. Among those killed were Turji’s second-in-command, Aminu Kanawa, and close allies, including his younger brother Dosso.
Buba described the killings as “a significant blow” to the terrorist group, notorious for kidnappings and attacks. He added that troops eliminated another key figure, Suleiman, who was leading reinforcements to Turji’s camp when he was killed.
Residents Applaud Military Action
Communities in Sokoto and Zamfara have expressed relief over the military’s efforts. “This is good news for us. We’ve suffered enough,” said Abubakar Isa, a resident of Isa, Sokoto State.
In Shinkafi, Zamfara State, Mallam Nuhu Bello shared how Turji’s activities forced him to abandon farming. “We couldn’t access our farms unless we paid taxes to the bandits. This action gives us hope,” he said.
Military Vows to Capture Turji
The DHQ reiterated its commitment to capturing Turji, who remains at large. In December 2024, Turji issued threats after the arrest of his associate Bako Wurgi, vowing to unleash terror on Zamfara communities.
Maj. Gen. Buba confirmed that the recent operations left Turji’s forces in disarray. “We are not relenting until these terrorists are completely destroyed,” he said.
Sokoto State authorities urged residents to remain vigilant, warning that fleeing bandits might attempt to infiltrate communities. Retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security Matters, praised the military’s success but encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities.
“This aligns with the government’s agenda to create a safer and more stable Sokoto State,” Usman stated.
Bandit Network in Disarray
The military’s success has disrupted terrorist operations, with several key camps destroyed and numerous militants killed. The operation also rescued hundreds of kidnapped victims, officials said.
Muhammad Abdullah, a resident of Goronyo, commended the military for restoring hope to affected communities. “Economic activities have collapsed due to the bandits. We pray this marks a turning point,” he said.
As the military intensifies its campaign, residents hope the efforts will lead to Turji’s capture and long-term peace in the region.
