Senator Ireti Kingibe, the current representative of FCT senatorial district, has broken ranks with her colleagues in the Nigerian Senate, calling for an open investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The allegations were raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, sparking widespread debate. Initially criticized for her stance, Kingibe, who chairs the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, now insists on a transparent probe.
“As a sitting Senator, I will always defend the truth and fight to right all wrongs,” she said. “Sexual harassment has become commonplace in our homes and workplaces. We must end it.”
Mounting Pressure for Accountability
The call for transparency comes amid mounting pressure from advocacy groups and the public. The Women for Change Vanguard, led by activist Irene Imoh, has petitioned the United Nations, urging global intervention.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Imoh called for evidence to support the claims. “The burden of proof lies with the accuser,” she stated. “If Senator Natasha has been a victim, she should present credible evidence.”
Public opinion remains divided. Some Nigerians applaud Kingibe’s stance, while others demand caution, warning against reputational damage caused by unverified allegations.
Push for Gender Equity in Politics
Beyond the current controversy, Kingibe reaffirmed her commitment to gender equity. She is sponsoring the Gender Equity Bill 2025, which seeks to establish special seats for women in governance.
“This bill has passed its first reading and awaits the second,” she noted. “I remain resolute in fostering a democracy where justice, fairness, and equity prevail.”
As the debate unfolds, Nigerians await the Senate’s decision on whether to initiate a formal inquiry.
