2023 Polls: Buhari not Ready to Conduct Free, Fair Elections

By our Reporter

Counting days now to general elections in Nigeria, CSOs raised alarm over missing PVCs.

Rightly the case, but barely 49 days to the 2023 general elections, a group of Civil Society Organisations Friday, expressed concerns over the reports of missing Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs and the challenge of locating them in the country.

With emerging evidennce on this, the CSOs are worried that President Muhammadu Buhari must be prepared to conduct free and fair elections to herald credible leadership in Nigeria.

In this regard, these organisations expressed their views during a press conference by the Focal Person of the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Groups, Maximilian Tashilani; the Convener of Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance, Okpanachi Jacob; and chairman of Arewa Transformational Leaders, Yusuf Ibrahim.

Tritely so, they also raised concerns over the voter education carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which, they said, needed to be improved.

In this vein, the CSOs have also warned the judiciary against the reckless granting of court orders, injunctions and judgments.

They said, “From all indications, President Muhammadu Buhari should not only be desirous of bequeathing the legacy of free and fair elections, he should also be poised to ensure that all institutions responsible for delivering credible elections are genuinely independent.

It is their opinion that, “The difficulties voters undergo to collect their PVCs are unbearable, since aside from the challenges of locating one PVC, there are also reports of missing PVCs,” they stressed.
