The Senate on Tuesday July 11 2017 passed the mandatory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Bill. This bill is aimed at facilitating the treatment of the victims of gunshots injuries.
Speaking on the passage of the Bill, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said not every victim of gunshots wound is a criminal as there many that are victims of the misfiring bullets hence, it’s important that a legal framework be put into place to avoid story that touch with unnecessary loss of lives.
By the passage of this Bill, the Senate has moved to insure that every health centers and hospital in Nigeria, both public and private, must accept to treat victims of gunshots injuries without any police report, ”the Senate President said.

What we’ve done is to ensure that everyone is entitled to medical treatment, irrespective of the cause of the gunshots. We should reserve judgment for the criminal justice system, and leave healthcare for the medical professionals.”
The mandatory Treatment and Care of Victims of gunshots Bill also ensures that every person including security agents shall render every possible backing to any person with gunshots injuries and insure that the victim is taken to the nearest hospital/health care centers for treatment.
Also, the Bill authorizes that no person with gunshots injuries shall be refused immediate treatment by any hospital in Nigeria whether or not financial deposit is paid.
