Fired Facebook moderators in Kenya sue Meta

43 Facebook content moderators in Kenya have sued the parent company of the social networking site Meta for wrongful dismissal.

Reuters reported that moderators have lost their jobs at Sama, a Kenyan company hired to moderate Facebook content to regulate unions.

They also said they were blacklisted for applying for the same position at another outsourcing firm, Majorel, after Facebook switched contractors.

In January, 260 content moderators working at Facebook’s moderation center in Nairobi were notified they were fired from Sama, an outsourcing firm that has been running the offices since 2019, Foxglove, the technology rights group advocating the lawsuit, said.

“The redundancy being undertaken is unlawful because no genuine nor justifiable reason was given for the redundancy,” the moderators said in their court petition.

Meta is yet to comment on the matter.

Last month, Meta filed an appeal in Kenya challenging a ruling which said it could be sued even though it has no official presence in the East African country.
