Nigerian Senate Mourns the Deceased Former Minister, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu

The Nigerian Senate has publicly expressed its profound grief over the loss of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the esteemed former Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, who passed away on April 11, 2024.

In a motion led by Senator Anthony Ani under the category of “Urgent Matter of Public Importance,” the Senate paid homage to Dr. Onu’s remarkable impact on the nation.

Senator Ani recognized Dr. Onu as a paragon of academic and professional excellence who made significant strides in chemical engineering, while Senator Orji Kalu commended Dr. Onu’s dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress.

Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jubrin applauded Dr. Onu for his unwavering integrity and pivotal influence in advocating for internal democracy within the APC’s formation. Senator Abba Moro and others, including Senators Ali Ndume, Danjuma Goje, and Enyinnaya Abaribe, offered their own poignant tributes to a man seen as a committed servant of Nigeria’s advancement.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio reflected on Dr. Onu’s substantial role in establishing the APC. He extolled Dr. Onu’s humility, integrity, and lifelong commitment to national service.

The Senate stood in a minute of silence to honor the memory of Dr. Onu, suggesting that the government immortalize his contributions. Furthermore, a select Senate delegation was appointed to convey the chamber’s sympathy to the bereaved family.

This delegation, led by Senator Ashiru Oyelola, compromises a cross-section of Senate members, each sharing a deep respect for Dr. Onu’s service to the country and his enduring legacy.

Dr. Onu’s political trajectory began in the NPN and blossomed as he became Abia State’s first executive governor. Spanning a venerable ministerial tenure, he dedicated his energy to promoting science and technology until his resignation in 2022.

Dr. Onu’s death at the age of 72 marks the end of a life rich in public service and devotion to his country’s socio-economic enrichment.
