Goodluck Jonathan: Reflects on His Overturned Ideas After His Presidency.

Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s former President, has expressed disappointment over the reversal of several progressive measures he implemented while in office.

Speaking at the 25th-anniversary celebration of Igbinedion University in Okada, Edo State, Jonathan highlighted his administration’s strides, particularly the admission of women into the Nigeria Defence Academy.

Jonathan, who held the presidency from May 5, 2010, to May 29, 2015, underscored his commitment to women’s inclusion in the military, an effort that produced not only integration but excellence with some of the female admissions emerging as top jet fighter pilots.

He said, “I recall the challenges faced by women in the military. But as President, I directed that the Nigeria Defence Academy commence admission of women into the institution.

“However some of the ideas, which could have helped in the technological development of the country were jettisoned.”

Addressing other sectors, he advocated for the removal of hindrances to women’s professional advancement and urged a shift in the nation’s education system to prioritize skills acquisition and technology over certification.

The former leader, noting the imperative of reform for national development, also addressed social issues such as cultism and bullying in schools, calling for decisive action on these fronts.

Jonathan acknowledged the role played by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar in the establishment of Igbinedion University, marking a commencement for the private university sector in Nigeria.

He also commended the institution’s founder, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, for his vision and tenacity, which has set a precedent for private universities across the country.

Abubakar, in his remarks, commended Esama’s foresight and progress in managing the university, saying “25 years ago, we gave a license to establish this University and Esama has been making progress. Esama, we congratulate you”.
