Tinubu Pushes for Anti-Doping Legislation, Looks to Senate for Approval

President Bola Tinubu has taken a step towards promoting fair play in sports by presenting a bill to the Nigerian Senate designed to combat doping.

This initiative focuses on protecting Nigerian athletes from the harmful effects of performance, enhancing drugs, both before and during competitions.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, confirmed that he received President Tinubu’s letter during a recent plenary session.

This Executive Bill, titled the “National Anti-Doping Bill 2024,” aims to regulate the use of substances by athletes, ensuring clean competition.

President Tinubu specifically highlighted the need for Nigeria to comply with the World Anti-Doping Code by establishing a National Anti-Doping Organization.

This organization would be responsible for overseeing sports competitions and aligning Nigeria with international anti-doping standards.

The World Anti-Doping Code is the foundational document for global anti-doping efforts, bringing consistency across sports and public authorities around the world.

Emphasizing the timeliness, President Tinubu urged the Senate to act swiftly so Nigeria can participate fully in the upcoming Olympic Games seminar in Paris in July 2024.

With high regard, President Tinubu appealed to the Senate for quick consideration and passage of this crucial bill, reiterating the significance of Nigeria’s commitment to clean sports and fair competition.
