South Africa’s Apex Court Denies Zuma’s Parliamentary Bid

The Constitutional Court of South Africa has determined that the country’s former leader, Jacob Zuma, cannot be a candidate in the parliamentary elections scheduled for this month.

Zuma, who stepped down from the presidency in 2018 amidst conflicts within the ruling African National Congress (ANC), has since been advocating for a nascent party named uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), echoing the name of the ANC’s historic military branch.

The court’s decision comes at a critical juncture as the ANC faces the prospect of losing its long-standing parliamentary majority.

The new party, MK, is perceived as a significant contender, particularly in the region of KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma’s political stronghold.
