SYRIA: Asma, Syria’s First Lady, Has Been Diagnosed With Leukaemia

The office of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad disclosed today, Tuesday that his wife, Asma al-Assad, has fallen ill with leukaemia. This comes after her battle with breast cancer, which she overcame in 2019.

“The Presidential office confirms that the First Lady, Asma al-Assad is undergoing acute myeloid leukaemia treatment,” the official release stated.

At 48 years of age, Asma is set to begin a rigorous treatment regimen necessitating isolation. Consequently, she will temporarily retreat from her official duties and public appearances.

Asma announced her complete recovery from breast cancer in August 2019, which she stated was identified at an early stage.

Since the onset of Syria’s war in 2011, the British-born ex-investment banker has adopted the public duty of spearheading charitable initiatives and engaging with the families of fallen soldiers, while simultaneously attracting the enmity of the opposition.

Currently, Asma runs the Syria Trust for Development, a large NGO that serves as an umbrella organisation for many of the aid and development operations in Syria.

She believes that, the same way she overcame her Breast cancer, she would overcome this current challenge of Leukaemia.
