Chad’s PM Succes Masra Steps Down After Electoral Defeat

Chad’s political landscape is shifting with the resignation of Prime Minister Succes Masra following his unsuccessful bid in the nation’s presidential contest.

Masra had spent a period in exile in the United States from 2022 to 2023, and his premiership was seen as an olive branch to the opposition in the lead-up to the election. Despite this, he was ultimately defeated by Mahamat Idriss Deby, the incumbent president.

Masra publicly announced his resignation on X, along with the departure of other transitional government members, in accordance with constitutional protocols.

Mahamat Deby, who assumed the role of transitional leader after his father’s death in a rebel altercation in 2021, retained his presidency by earning 61% of the popular vote.

Masra, who accrued 18.5% of votes, initially contested the results and declared his own victory. However, he would acknowledge his defeat subsequent to the Chad’s Constitutional Council’s affirmation of Deby’s electoral success.

This election marks a pivotal step in Chad’s endeavor to navigate back to constitutional governance after a history marked by coups and internal strife.
