In a recent interview with Noble Eyisi, the acclaimed Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka expressed his view that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is not suitable for Nigeria’s presidency, citing a lack of essential qualities required for the role.
This sentiment from Soyinka comes as a reflection on Obi’s performance in the 2023 presidential election where he trailed behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Soyinka expressed his desire that Obi should refrain from the 2027 electoral race, reasoning that Obi’s influence over his supporters has demonstrated an unfitness to govern the nation.
“I hope for the nation’s sake he doesn’t put himself forward for the next election because based on the conduct he endorsed among his followers, it has become evident to me that he’s unfit to lead the country,” Soyinka elaborated.
He conveyed his observation that certain political leaders have been fermenting division, with a strong insinuation that they would ultimately face the repercussions of their deeds.

In the interview, Soyinka discussed the broader implications of political education and the propagation of false information, signaling his dismay at the conduct encouraged and tolerated by those seeking leadership. He warned about the inevitable backlash against such leaders from the forces they had fostered.
Soyinka’s remarks come following a string of derogatory online comments targeted at him by what is commonly referred to as “Obidients”, the zealous supporters of Peter Obi.
“It’s deeply troubling to see potential leaders fostering such divisive behavior among the youth, which signals a lack of understanding and inability to govern a nation as diverse as ours,” he added.
In conclusion, Soyinka’s stance and insights reaffirm his long-standing commitment to speaking his truth, despite any contrary reactions or pressures.
