Super Eagles’ FIFA Ranking Declines Amidst World Cup Qualifying Woes

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have experienced a significant setback in their footballing journey, sliding down eight places in the latest FIFA rankings unveiled on Thursday. This downturn in ranking points, dropping to 1498.93 from their previous tally of 1520.27, comes amid a series of disheartening performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, placing them at the 38th spot globally.

Nigeria’s aspiration to grace the World Cup’s grand stage is shrouded in uncertainty, further complicated by the controversy swarming the team’s management. Their performance thus far has left them winless in the qualifiers, casting a shadow over their ambitions.

In the African panorama, the Super Eagles currently stand as the fifth-highest-ranked team. The Atlas Lions of Morocco lead the continental charge ranking 12th globally, followed by Senegal’s Teranga Lions at 18th, Egypt’s Pharaohs at 36th, and the reigning African champions, Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, just a notch above Nigeria at 37th.

Globally, Argentina continues to reign at the top of the FIFA global standings, followed closely by France and Belgium to round out the top three. In a slight reshuffle, Brazil ascends to 4th, nudging England to the 5th position.

The football world anticipates further fluctuations in these rankings, especially with the European Championships and Copa America currently in full swing. As nations battle it out on these prestigious stages, the Super Eagles and their supporters are left to ponder the path ahead, hoping for a resurgence that would reclaim their standing on both the African and world football stages.
