Kanayo O. Kanayo Advocates For Igbo Presidency

Nollywood icon, Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, widely known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, believes that Nigeria will truly advance as a nation when an individual of Igbo heritage assumes the presidency.

During an episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, Kanayo O. Kanayo discussed the concept of “Igbophobia,” which he described as an irrational fear that has led to the exclusion of Igbos from presidential roles. He stressed the importance of his dual identity as both Igbo and Nigerian, saying, “Being Igbo means I come from a region with its own dialect, similar to the Hausas and Fulanis. It signifies that I am uniquely endowed, and everything I engage in thrives. Being referred to as the ‘Jews of this part of the world’ carries significant meaning. With great gifts come great expectations. We are always active in the marketplace, and our vibrant culture makes us stand out, often envied by others.”

Kanayo O. Kanayo highlighted the entrepreneurial nature of the Igbo people, stating, “An Igbo individual can start with a small kiosk and, within a year, transform it into a shop. This drive and success are innate, blessed by what we call Chukwu Abiama. This quality makes us the envy of others.”

Reflecting on the 2023 elections, he addressed accusations that Igbos aimed to dominate Lagos, questioning the rationale behind such claims. He argued for the elimination of the state of origin concept in Nigeria, advocating for merit-based employment.

Kanayo O. Kanayo also touched on the historical and ongoing challenges faced by the Igbo community, noting, “Being Igbo and Nigerian often feels conflicting, as if the civil war never truly ended.” He recounted a conversation with Prof Yusuf of the NHIS, which highlighted existing prejudices against the Igbo people.

In conclusion, he asserted that the fear of an Igbo president leading to secession is unfounded. He believes that an Igbo presidency would unlock Nigeria’s full potential, especially in economic terms, and bring about significant progress for the nation.
