Govt. Urged To Address Cholera Out Break With Urgency

James Faleke, the Representative of the Ikeja Federal Constituency, has emphasized the need for the Nigerian government to address the cholera outbreak with the same level of urgency and seriousness as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. He conveyed this message during an interview today.

According to reports from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), 53 cholera-related fatalities have been documented thus far. In response, Dr. Jide Idris, the Director-General of NCDC, confirmed the activation of a National Emergency Operation Centre for cholera.

Idris disclosed, “As of June 24, 2024, there have been 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths reported across 31 states and 107 LGAs, with a case fatality rate of 3.5% since the beginning of the year.”

Faleke stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to contain the outbreak, stating, “Every Nigerian must exercise caution; our commitment to cleanliness is crucial.” He emphasized, “We need to approach this cholera outbreak with the same gravity as we did with COVID-19. Cholera has claimed numerous lives. In this modern era, we should not be grappling with a cholera epidemic in Nigeria. Nevertheless, since it has emerged, we must address it. Individuals should be vigilant about their food and beverage choices. With the prevalence of counterfeit products, it is imperative to avoid consuming such items. Opt for clean water over questionable alternatives.”
