Rishi Sunak Resigns As UK PM, Conservative Party

In a dramatic turn of events, Rishi Sunak has stepped down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Conservative Party, following a crushing defeat in the country’s recent general election.

“I have given this job my all. But you have sent a clear message, and yours is the only judgement that matters,” Sunak said in a statement on X, his social media platform.
Sunak’s resignation comes after the Conservative Party suffered a historic loss, with many seats turning to Labour. Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, claimed victory early on Friday, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.

“The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” Sunak acknowledged. “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss.”

Addressing his party, Sunak expressed regret over the defeat of many Tory MPs, saying, “I am sorry.” He went on to appreciate their service, saying, “It pains me to think how many good colleagues who contributed so much to their communities and our country will now no longer sit in the House of Commons. I thank them for their hard work and their service.”

Despite the defeat, Sunak reflected on his achievements as leader, citing improvements in inflation, mortgage rates, economic growth, and international relations. He also mentioned the strengthening of the UK’s union, expressing pride in his leadership.

“This is a difficult day, but I leave this job honoured to have been Prime Minister of the best country in the world,” Sunak said, announcing his intention to step down once a leadership race begins.

Sunak’s resignation marks the end of an era in UK politics, and the beginning of a new chapter under Labour leadership.
