In a significant development, Kaduna State health workers have suspended their five-day warning strike after reaching a consensus with the government on improving their welfare package.
The strike, which began on Monday, was called off following a fruitful discussion that resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
“The health workers engaged in a frantic and meaningful discussion with the government, which resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU),” said Nassa Yashi, State Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM). “The suspension is to also give room for more negotiations and await the government to fulfil her own side of the MOU.”

With the signing of the MOU, health workers are expected to resume their normal duties immediately. The state administrative council (SAC) expressed appreciation for the support and resoluteness of the health workers, acknowledging that their efforts have led to a significant success in the struggle for better welfare.
While the suspension of the strike is a welcome development, health workers remain cautious, with Yashi emphasizing that the suspension is conditional. “Do not forget, it is suspension, meaning if the promises made are not fulfilled, we shall resume the industrial action at the appropriate time,” he warned.
The agreement marks a significant victory for health workers in Kaduna State, and their determination and unity have paid off. As they return to work, they do so with the assurance that their welfare will receive the attention it deserves.
