Oja Oba Market In Lagos Shut Down Due To Poor Sanitation

In a bid to safeguard public health, officials from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the state Environmental Sanitation Corps have sealed the Oja Oba Market in the Ile Epo area of Lagos.

This decisive action was taken due to the market’s notorious reputation for poor sanitary conditions and failure to comply with set waste management regulations.

Key Points noted are

  • Poor sanitation: Oja Oba Market was closed due to its poor hygienic conditions, which posed a risk to public health.
  • Complaints from the public: The closure was prompted by complaints from concerned members of the public, including #Freestuv1.
  • Zero Tolerance Task Force: A combined task force comprising LAWMA’s Monitoring and Compliance Team and the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) sealed the market.
  • Preventing water-borne diseases: The measure aims to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
  • Call to action: The public is urged to report any instances of poor sanitation in markets or other commercial establishments.
  • Previous action: In February, LAWMA officials closed Ire-Akari Market in Lagos’ Isolo district due to inadequate cleanliness.
