NGF Holds Meeting On How To Address Proposed Nationwide Protest, Financial Autonomy

In a move shrouded in secrecy, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened a closed-door meeting at their secretariat in Abuja yesterday night.

The gathering, attended by governors from 36 states, comes weeks after the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to local government areas in Nigeria, sparking controversy and speculation about the meeting’s agenda.

While the governors remained tight-lipped about the discussions, their gathering coincides with the planned nationwide protest against bad governance scheduled for August 1.

The meeting’s secrecy has fueled speculation that the governors may be strategizing on how to address the looming protest and its potential impact on their administration.

In attendance were Governors Lawal Dauda (Zamfara), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Alex Otti (Abia), while Enugu and Borno states were represented by their deputies.

The absence of a formal briefing or statement after the meeting has only added to the intrigue surrounding the governors’ intentions.

As the country teeters on the brink of widespread protests, the governors’ clandestine meeting has raised questions about their commitment to addressing the grievances driving the demonstrations.

With the clock ticking down to August 1, Nigerians eagerly await clarity on the governors’ stance and their plans to address the growing discontent.
