Govt. Increases Security Measures Ahead Of Planned Nationwide Protest

The Nigerian Government has ordered increased security measures at its borders in anticipation of a nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, 2024, to address the country’s economic challenges.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has directed its officers to be vigilant and prevent unscrupulous foreign elements from entering the country.

The protest, dubbed the #EndBadGovernance protest, is a response to the rising inflation rate, which reached 34.19% in June 2024, largely due to the elimination of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira.

The economic hardship has led to increased costs of essential items, making them unaffordable for millions of Nigerians.

Other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police, have also raised concerns about the protest, warning of potential hijacking by criminal groups and foreign mercenaries.

The authorities have urged organizers to submit their plans and have deployed over 4,200 police officers across the Federal Capital Territory.

President Tinubu and state governors have engaged with stakeholders to address the country’s concerns and prevent the protest.

Politicians have called for dialogue, encouraging organizers to give the authorities more time to address the issues.
