IGP Egbetokun Addresses Nation On Ongoing Protest, Warns Against Anarchy

In a speech delivered yesterday, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, addressed the nation on the ongoing hunger protests.

He expressed concern over the violent turn of events, emphasizing the police’s commitment to maintaining law and order while protecting citizens’ rights.

Egbetokun highlighted intelligence reports indicating plans for violent protests and anarchy, leading to warnings and advice for protesters to confine their demonstrations to designated areas.

Despite this, hoodlums infiltrated the protests, leading to looting, destruction of property, and attacks on security personnel.

The IGP lamented the loss of life and property, citing instances of police stations being destroyed, government infrastructure being looted, and warehouses being razed.

He emphasized the police’s professional conduct, including providing security for protesters despite court orders being breached.

Egbetokun also warned of terror elements infiltrating the protests, citing an incident in Borno State where an explosion occurred, killing four and injuring 34.

He assured the public that the police would maintain public safety and order, using proportionate measures to address the situation.

The IGP’s address serves as a call for calm, urging protesters to eschew violence and work towards peaceful resolutions.

As the situation continues to unfold, his words underscore the need for restraint and cooperation to prevent further chaos and destruction.
