Lagos Police Set The Record Straight, No Ban On Peaceful Protests, But Warning Against Economic Disturbance

In a bid to clear the air and prevent misinformation, the Lagos State Police Command has categorically denied reports that it has banned peaceful protests in the state.

This clarification comes on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s recent broadcast, which sparked speculation about the police’s stance on public demonstrations.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos, took to social media to address the issue, describing reports of a protest ban as “mischievous” and urging media outlets to refrain from sensationalism.

Hundeyin emphasized that the police are committed to maintaining public order and safety, while also respecting citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly.

In a tweet, Hundeyin stated, “How did ‘ban’ enter this matter? This is mischievous reportage. Trust the headline at your own peril.

Do well to listen yourself. AIT should not join some media houses to sensationalize issues and end up heating up the polity.”

Hundeyin’s statement underscores the police’s nuanced position on protests.

While they are opposed to economic disturbance and activities that might compromise public safety, they are supportive of peaceful protests and the right to free expression.

To reinforce this stance, Hundeyin led a team of officers to Ojota, the epicenter of the protests, to engage with demonstrators and ensure a peaceful atmosphere.

This proactive approach aims to prevent escalation and promote constructive dialogue between the police, protesters, and other stakeholders.

As the situation continues to unfold, the Lagos Police Command’s clarification serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate reporting and responsible communication.

By setting the record straight, the police hope to reduce tensions and foster a more informed public discourse.
