WHO Convenes Emergency Meeting As Mpox Spreads Across African Countries

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has sounded the alarm, reporting that mpox has now spread to 10 African countries, with the Democratic Republic of Congo bearing the brunt of the outbreak, accounting for a staggering 96% of all cases and deaths.

As the situation spirals out of control, the World Health Organization’s chief has taken swift action, urgently convening an expert committee to assess whether the escalating mpox crisis warrants declaration as an international public health emergency.

With over 14,000 cases and 511 deaths reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, the outbreak has reached catastrophic proportions.

The WHO is racing against time to mobilize a comprehensive response, working in tandem with affected countries, the Africa Centre for Disease Control, and other global health partners to contain the spread of mpox and mitigate its devastating impact on communities across Africa.

As the emergency committee convenes, the world holds its breath, awaiting a critical decision that could have far-reaching consequences for global health security.
