Experts Warn Against Giving Peanuts To Babies Due To Choking

Paediatricians are warning parents and caregivers against giving whole peanuts to children under five years old, citing a significant risk of choking.

The experts recommend introducing peanuts in a paste or finely ground form to prevent aspiration and promote safe consumption.

According to Professor Olusanya Adejuyigbe, a Paediatric Surgeon, whole peanuts can be a choking hazard, and parents should prepare peanuts as a paste or chew them into soft pieces before feeding their children.

He also advises against commercially prepared peanuts, which may contain additives.

Dr. Olufemi Akodu, a Paediatrician, echoes this warning, stating that whole peanuts or large pieces should not be given to children under five due to the choking risk.

He recommends introducing peanuts in small amounts, starting with peanut puree, peanut butter, or finely ground peanuts, and monitoring for signs of allergy or intolerance.

The experts agree that introducing peanuts early can have health benefits, including reducing the risk of peanut allergies and promoting gut health and nutrient intake.

However, they emphasize the importance of safe introduction to prevent choking hazards and allergic reactions.

Parents and caregivers are advised to:

* Prepare peanuts as a paste or finely ground form.

* Introduce peanuts in small amounts.

* Monitor for signs of allergy or intolerance.

* Avoid whole peanuts or large pieces for children under five.

* Choose peanut puree, peanut butter, or finely ground peanuts.

By following these guidelines, parents can promote safe and healthy consumption of peanuts for their children.
