The National Judicial Council (NJC) is scheduled to meet on Friday, August 16, to determine the successor of outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, who will retire on August 22 upon reaching the mandatory age of 70.
The NJC will forward its decision to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the most senior Justice on the Supreme Court bench, is likely to succeed Ariwoola, following the tradition of the apex court.
If confirmed, she will become Nigeria’s second female Chief Justice, serving a four-year term until 2028.

Kekere-Ekun has had a distinguished career, starting as a private practitioner before joining the Lagos State Judiciary in 1989.
She was appointed to the High Court of Lagos State in 1996 and later elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2004 and the Supreme Court in 2023.
The Supreme Court has scheduled a valedictory session for August 22 to honor Ariwoola’s service to the nation.
The NJC’s decision on Friday will pave the way for a seamless transition in the judiciary’s leadership.
