Floods Hit Jigawa, Claim 16 Lives, Destroy Homes, Farmlands

A severe flood has ravaged Jigawa State, resulting in the loss of 16 lives and the destruction of 3,936 houses.

The disaster has also submerged 2,744 hectares of farmland, leaving thousands of people displaced.

The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the devastating impact of the flood, which was triggered by torrential rainfall since the start of the 2024 rainy season.

The affected areas span across 10 local government areas, with the deaths attributed to building collapses, drowning, and canoe mishaps.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr. Haruna Mariga, warned that the situation may worsen due to anticipated high rainfall.

In response to the disaster, the agency has provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials, including food and blankets, to mitigate the suffering of the displaced persons.

The flood has caused widespread destruction, and the situation remains dire, with concerns about the potential for further devastation.
