Food Prices Drop In Yobe, Borno, Adamawa As Harvest Season Begins

A significant drop in food prices has been recorded in major towns across Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa states, bringing relief to consumers.

The prices of perishable items like tomatoes, peppers, and okra have fallen by up to 50% due to the arrival of new harvests.

In Yobe, a big basket of tomatoes now costs N40,000, down from N120,000, while a small basket of peppers sells for N18,000, previously N75,000. Okra prices have also halved, from N50,000 to N25,000.

However, onion prices have increased, with a bag now costing N50,000, up from N28,000 to N30,000.

Yam prices have skyrocketed in some areas, with two small tubers now costing N4,000, up from N1,500.

Farmers attribute the price drop to the new harvests, while yam sellers blame the shortage of supply and high transportation costs.

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria has called on the government to support farmers with capital to establish storage facilities to boost productivity and income.

In Borno and Adamawa, prices of perishable goods have also fallen, but grain prices remain high, with harvests expected to commence in October.

The Nigeria Small Scale Industrialists has noted that grain prices will likely remain high until the harvest season begins.
