Kekere -Ekun Urged To Reform Judiciary, Restore Public Confidence

As Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun prepares to assume leadership of Nigeria’s judiciary, senior lawyers, activists, and stakeholders are calling for a complete overhaul of the system to restore public confidence.

At a roundtable discussion in Abuja, panellists presented a five-point agenda for the incoming CJN, emphasizing the need for reform in judicial appointments, discipline, and accountability.

Professors Ernest Ojukwu and Samuel Erugo, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria, stressed the importance of merit-based appointments and transparent selection processes.

They also advocated for the Supreme Court to review its own judgments, especially in cases with significant public outcry.
Activist Aisha Yesufu emphasized the need for financial transparency, accountability, and public reporting to restore trust in the judiciary.

Other panellists urged the new CJN to address conflicting judgments, abuse of interim injunctions, and ensure that only true winners at the polls become leaders.

The incoming CJN is expected to prioritize discipline and accountability, commit to a policy of restoring integrity and merit to judicial appointments, and introduce transparent selection processes.

With the judiciary facing criticism and accusations of nepotism and favouritism, Kekere-Ekun’s leadership is seen as a crucial opportunity for reform and restoration of public confidence.
