NCDC Confirms 48 Cases Of Mpox

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 48 cases of Mpox, a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease, across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Thankfully, “no death has been recorded so far this year” from the outbreak, according to the NCDC’s situation report for week 34.

The report revealed 57 new suspected cases, with eight confirmed cases reported in the same week.

The age distribution of the cumulative number of confirmed Mpox cases showed that 17 cases were recorded among ages 0-10, seven cases among ages 11-20, nine cases among 21-30, eight cases among ages 31-40, and seven cases among ages 41-50.

The NCDC noted that “the National Mpox multi-sectoral and multi-partner Emergency Operation Centre continues to coordinate the response in the country.” This effort aims to contain the spread of the disease and protect the lives of Nigerians.

Mpox, which occurs sporadically in remote villages of Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests, is caused by the Mpox virus.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared Mpox a public health emergency of continental security on August 13, 2024.

The NCDC’s prompt response and coordination with partner agencies have helped mitigate the spread of the disease, and the country remains vigilant in its efforts to protect public health.
