Flood Destroys Farm Lands In Gombe, Yobe

A devastating flood has ravaged Gombe and Yobe states, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. According to reports, at least 4,167 houses and farmlands have been destroyed, with thousands of people displaced.

The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that 2,517 houses and shops were destroyed in 33 communities across the state, while the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency reported 1,650 houses destroyed in Jajere and Yunusari towns.

The flood, which occurred between August 12 and August 22, has affected communities in Dukku, Funakaye, and Billiri local government areas of Gombe State, with windstorms and heavy downpour causing widespread damage.

While there have been no reported loss of life, two children were injured, and seven animals were washed away.

In response to the disaster, the Taraba State Government has established a Flood Control Team across all 168 wards of the state to tackle the impending effects of flood.

Governor Agbu Kefas has assured that the team will focus on emergency management and proactive measures to prevent future disasters.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State government has advised residents living in flood-prone areas to evacuate their crops, poultry, fish ponds, and domestic animals to safe places to avoid being caught unawares by flooding.

With the rising water levels of the River Niger and the impending release of water from Lagdo Dam by Cameroon, residents are urged to take proactive measures to protect their lives and livelihoods.
