Ugandan Olympian Dies After Being Set Ablaze By Boy Friend

The sports world is reeling in shock and grief as Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei succumbs to her injuries after a heinous attack by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach. The 33-year-old athlete, who had just participated in the Paris Olympics, was set ablaze at her home in Kenya, suffering burns to 80% of her body.

As the news of her passing spread, the Uganda Olympic Committee President, Donald Rukare, expressed his devastation, saying, “We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei… following a vicious attack by her boyfriend. This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure.”

Cheptegei’s tragic death has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice, with the Uganda Athletics Federation condemning the act of domestic violence.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” they said in a statement. “As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”

The incident has once again highlighted the pervasive issue of domestic violence in Kenya, where 34% of women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

Cheptegei’s story serves as a heart-wrenching reminder of the devastating consequences of such violence, leaving behind a trail of shattered dreams and a community in mourning.
