Cholera Outbreak Hits Edo State, Six Cases Confirmed

A recent declaration by the Edo State Ministry of Health has confirmed a cholera outbreak in the region, with six cases already identified.

Dr. Stephenson Ojeifo, Director of Public Health, announced the outbreak during a press conference in Benin, stating, “We sent 23 suspected samples that tested positive in the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) to the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja for confirmatory testing.”

The confirmed cases were found among 40 suspected cholera cases reported in the state.

Dr. Ojeifo reassured the public that the patients are receiving treatment and are in stable condition, saying, “The patients are well and have been discharged.

Fortunately, we have not had any new cases in the community exhibiting symptoms of cholera.”

To combat the outbreak, the state government has activated measures to address the situation effectively. Dr. Ojeifo explained, “We are activating all measures to address the outbreak we are currently facing.

The state, in collaboration with the Edo Primary Health Care Development Agency, has selected several Primary Health Centres at the grassroots level to manage suspected cholera cases.”

The public has been advised to remain calm and take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.

Dr. Ojeifo urged individuals experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention, saying, “We advise against self-medication. If you experience watery stools and diarrhoea, please seek hospital treatment.”
