In an unexpected turn of events, Femi Falana, the renowned lawyer representing Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, has responded to the police invitation for questioning, requesting a postponement and seeking clarity on the allegations levelled against his client.
Ajaero, who was summoned by the Nigeria Police Force on Monday, was expected to appear for interrogation today to answer questions regarding alleged terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, and other related offences.
However, Falana has informed the police that his client is unable to honour the invitation on the scheduled date due to a prior engagement that was fixed before the receipt of the invitation letter.

In a letter dated August 20, 2024, Falana proposed an alternative date of Wednesday, August 29, 2024, for Ajaero’s appearance, while also requesting the details and nature of the allegations levelled against him. This request is in line with Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to fair hearing.
The police had warned that a warrant of arrest would be issued if Ajaero failed to appear for interrogation on the original date, but Falana’s prompt response has averted this possibility, at least for now.
As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear: Ajaero’s legal team is determined to ensure that his rights are protected, and that the allegations against him are thoroughly investigated in a transparent and fair manner.
