Athan Achonu Accuses INEC Of Being Biased

Senator Athan Achonu, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Imo State, has made a scathing attack on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that it has become “another arm of the ruling party, the APC, turning our entire democratic institution into a mere circus.”

Achonu’s comments came after the Supreme Court affirmed Governor Hope Uzodinma as the winner of the governorship poll.

He expressed his disappointment, saying, “Today marks a significant moment in our collective journey to bring transformative change to our dear Imo State… Unfortunately, the judiciary is not able to ensure INEC does the right thing in election petition matters such as this.”

INEC’s spokesperson, MaryAnn Gods light, responded to the allegations, saying, “INEC is as independent as stipulated by the constitution of Nigeria. You cannot judge the commission by one man’s personal opinion.”

Cajethan Duke, the APC’s publicity secretary in Imo State, dismissed Achonu’s claims, saying, “Is this not laughable, ridiculous and delusional?

The allegation against an institution that has continued to earn the confidence of international communities in their efforts to deepen democracy in Nigeria is baseless.”
