The Edo State Ministry of Health has sounded the alarm, confirming three cases of mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) in the state, following the recent declaration of the disease as a Public Health Emergency by the Africa Centre for Diseases Control and the World Health Organization.
As the state scrambles to contain the outbreak, residents are urged to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent the spread of this viral disease.
“We urge everyone to maintain strict Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures at all times,” the ministry cautioned, emphasizing the importance of regular hand hygiene, disinfecting surfaces and objects, managing waste properly, and practicing respiratory hygiene by covering while coughing and sneezing and using masks in crowded areas.

The three patients, who are currently receiving care at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital and Edo State University Teaching Hospital, have been isolated, and the ministry is working tirelessly to identify and monitor their contacts.
As the situation unfolds, the state government, in collaboration with other stakeholders, will continue to provide the public with additional informative and educational materials as necessary.
