Nigerians were captivated by diverse searches in 2024, from trending personalities to entertainment and economic concerns, according to Google’s newly released Year in Search report.
The report, unveiled on Tuesday, highlights Bobrisky, Beta Edu, Shallipopi, and the lyrics to “Ogechi” among the year’s top searches. “This year’s insights provide a window into the questions and interests that shaped the lives of Nigerians,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google West Africa’s Communications Manager.
Entertainment dominated the search lists, with movies such as A Tribe Called Judah and Treasure in the Sky ranking among the most-searched. Popular TV shows like Supacell and Queen of Tears also featured prominently. On the music front, Shallipopi and Boy Spyce led the charts with hits like “Ozeba” and “I Don’t Care.”

“Nigerians displayed a growing curiosity about lyrics, with songs like ‘Ogechi’ and ‘Ozeba’ leading searches in the lyrics category,” Kola-Ogunlade added.
Beyond entertainment, pressing socio-political and economic topics drew attention. Queries like “How much is the dollar to Naira today?” and “Who won the U.S. presidential election?” revealed concerns about global events and local economic realities. Searches on the new national anthem and the national grid also reflected public interest in national developments.
This year’s report underscores how search trends mirror societal interests, offering a valuable glimpse into Nigeria’s cultural and economic pulse.
