Ethiopian Energy Minister Set to Highlight Clean Energy Progress at South Sudan Summit

Ethiopia’s Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu Itefa Geleta, is slated to attend the South Sudan Oil & Power (SSOP) 2024 conference and exhibition in Juba.

During the event held from June 25-28, Minister Geleta will discuss Ethiopia’s advancements in clean energy and stress the importance of investment in power infrastructure.

As a leader in Africa’s hydropower sector and an advocate for energy diversification, Ethiopia is committed to an energy sector that is an effective, secure, affordable, and sustainable cornerstone for the continent’s economic development and transformation.

Hosted by Energy Capital & Power, SSOP 2024 foregrounds South Sudan in the milieu of East African energy investments and partnerships. The conference provides a platform for investors interested in the region’s hydrocarbons, renewables, and power industries.

Recently, the Ethiopian government, in partnership with the World Bank, secured loan agreements totaling $1.72 billion aimed at boosting electricity and water services, with significant funds geared toward expanding the electricity grid and augmenting renewable energy capacity.

Commitments also include a project, financed by the African Development Bank with a $104 million grant, to enhance Ethiopia’s electricity supply through new transmission lines and substations.

In an international stride, Ethiopia inked agreements with Russia and Denmark to develop nuclear energy and strengthen their water sector and energy partnerships, respectively.

At SSOP 2024, Minister Geleta will outline Ethiopia’s strategic energy diversification efforts and how they play a vital role in ensuring consistent power delivery and generating investment interest in the East African energy landscape.
