Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against the Assembly and its newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, challenging the legitimacy of his impeachment. The lawsuit, filed at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, argues that his removal was unconstitutional and executed while the House was on recess.
Obasa claims he was ousted on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was outside the country. His application, dated February 12 and submitted by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), urges the court to rule his impeachment unlawful. He also seeks an expedited hearing to prevent disruptions in the Assembly’s legislative process.

“The House acted beyond its powers by convening during recess and removing a sitting Speaker without proper procedure,” Obasa’s filing states. He argues that the Assembly’s actions violated the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the House’s Standing Orders.
The former Speaker is asking the court to fast-track proceedings, limiting the time for the Assembly’s response to seven days post-hearing and allowing him only three days to file his legal replies. He insists that resolving the case swiftly is in the public interest to ensure stability in Lagos’ legislative leadership.
The Lagos State High Court has yet to assign a judge or set a hearing date for the case.
