Fear Grips Communities Along River Niger As Water Level Rises

A sense of urgency grips communities along the River Niger as water levels surge, prompting the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to issue a stark warning.

The alert comes as upstream activities in neighboring Niger and Mali push floodwaters ever closer to Nigerian shores.

As the River Niger’s waters continue their relentless rise, concerns grow for the safety of those living in its shadow.

With the peak expected to hit in late August and September, the clock is ticking. Dam operators at Kainji and Jebba stand ready, poised to mitigate the impending deluge.

NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, reassures that the dams are currently holding firm, but the situation demands vigilance. The agency’s plea to states and communities is clear: be prepared, and stay alert.

As the nation holds its breath, one thing is certain, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining the extent of the flood’s impact.
