FOCAC Goals: China’s Foreign Minister Visits Nigeria to Strengthen Strategic Partnership

China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has visited Nigeria, emphasizing strengthened cooperation and mutual growth between both nations. The visit aims to implement agreements reached at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing.

“This trip reaffirms our tradition of prioritizing Africa in the new year’s diplomacy,” Wang Yi said during his meeting with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar in Abuja. “We’re here to deepen the ten partnership actions agreed upon during FOCAC and enhance our strategic partnership.”

The ten actions span infrastructure development, trade, healthcare, and technology. A recent highlight is China Development Bank’s $254.76 million facility for the Kano-Kaduna railway, underscoring China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s infrastructure.

Wang Yi expressed optimism about continued mutual support on core national interests, adding, “As we pursue growth and revitalization, our partnership remains pivotal for mutual benefit.”

*Building a Global South Alliance*
Yusuf Tuggar welcomed China’s ongoing support, noting the strengthened ties since his visit to Beijing last year. Both ministers reiterated the importance of fostering solidarity among Global South nations, with Nigeria playing a crucial role.

The discussions also touched on advancing shared goals like poverty reduction, technological growth, and peacebuilding in Africa. The visit reaffirms China’s dedication to African development and the shared vision of a prosperous partnership.
